Freedom isn’t free.

Hello, my name is Scott Sanders. I’m a writer and published author.

During the past two years, I have become quite focused on the war in Ukraine. I have met with and interviewed close to 100 men and women; fathers and mothers; soldiers and politicians who have suffered from the brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia. They are making the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom and liberty.

Ukrainians are fighting for their future. Vladimir Putin has decided that he wants Ukraine to be back in Russia’s fold. Like some petulant child who broods over his lack of Christmas gifts, Putin has decided that it’s OK to kill hundreds of thousands of people (including over 400,000 of his own troops) in order to satisfy his immoral desire. Well, it is not OK. I have turned my interviews into the foundation of a book about the war.

I am going to Ukraine this September and will complete my book.  I am observing the war first-hand and interviewing the doctors, soldiers and politicians who are giving their time and sacrificing their lives to hold onto their country and their freedom. I have also interviewed women who have lost their children, lost their husbands, lost their homes. I also wish to film my interviews and create a documentary of the ugliness of war from a journalists perspective.

Please help me make this trip a reality.

I am seeking funds to make this 90 day trip a reality. I will need to hire a driver and translators. I also wish to hire a video crew  in Ukraine for filming the interviews. Please be generous and help me raise $75,000 to make this trip happen.

The Background

In 1978 I was able to visit Ukraine while it was pat of the Soviet Union’s Empire. Even then, Ukrainians wee a happy people with a positive outlook on life.I made with several singers and dancers. We corresponded for awhile until it was clear that the letters were being intercepted and not delivered. I lost track of my friends. My two subsequent visits to Ukraine have reinforced my sense of Ukrainian’s love of life.

In the 1980’s, I had the high privilege of working for President Ronald Reagan. During that time, I was able to meet many world leaders. My job was to work with leaders of youth organization, both in America and from around the world. One of those leaders was a humble man named Lech Walesa of Poland. At that time, he was emerging as a strong dissident in Warsaw, fighting for the rights of the Polish workers in Gdańsk and elsewhere. The power of his voice was global and his argument was persuasive. He cried for the rights of workers. He cried for freedom. He was heard. He changed the political landscape of Europe. Now we have another voice, another who cries for Freedom: Volodymyr Zelensky.

Now there needs to be a voice echoing this desire for freedom by Ukraine. I believe that my book can serve as a mouthpiece for this cry of freedom and desire for liberty.

I firmly believe that the cause of Ukraine must be the cause of all free countries. This is the subject of my book. Please help me make this story available to the world.

Thank you.
